SEPTEMBER 2023

One of the most common calls for service Pasco Sheriff’s Office receives is to investigate a car theft or burglary. These are often crimes of opportunity. By eliminating opportunities for crime, there is less potential to become a victim. PSO is proud to have created the #9pmRoutine, a reminder for citizens to remove their valuables, such as keys, wallets or guns, from their car and to lock the doors to their car and home before heading to bed for the night.

September is National Preparedness Month, with Atlantic hurricane season occurring until November 30th. Pasco Sheriff’s Office encourages citizens to prepare now before a storm affects our area. The 2023 Florida Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday is available for qualifying items related to disaster preparedness exempt from sales tax until Friday, Sept. 8, 2023. Planning for hurricane season in Florida is vital to ensure our citizens’ safety. Preparing in advance of the storm by having resources within PSO allows us to serve our citizens no matter the conditions.

With scams on the rise, Pasco Sheriff’s Office is sharing red flags to recognize a scam to prevent potential victims from falling for deceitful gimmicks. Scammers commonly use fear and technology schemes to try to con their victims. Most scams are different variations of the same old trick: try to intimidate people into handing over valuable information or hard-earned money. These red flags can help you stay ahead of a potential scammer’s tricks:

  • Scammers often pretend to be from an organization you know.
  • Honest institutions will not contact individuals for their personal information.
  • Scams often have an urgent demand to act immediately.
  • Requesting a specific form of payment is a red flag of a scam.

By working together, we can reduce these crimes of opportunity and help keep our students safe. During the first week of school, SRO Cpl. Cottrell strengthened PSO’s bond with students by ensuring their safety and helping them understand responsibility. Cpl. Cottrell partnered with Dr. John Long Middle School’s PTSA to distribute free bicycle locks to students. This initiative educated students on the importance of locking their bicycles up, and will help prevent bicycle thefts on campus.
