Burglaries, especially from cars, are often crimes of opportunity and convenience. Taking the time to remove valuables from your car and lock it each and every night can eliminate a criminal’s opportunity and prevent you from becoming a victim. The 9 p.m. Routine is a daily reminder to make sure that you’ve completed these simple safety steps each night before heading to bed. Pasco Sheriff’s Office encourages citizens to complete their 9 p.m. Routine each night, to keep our community safe.
July is Car Theft Awareness Month. Removing valuables and locking your car is one of the easiest ways to prevent yourself from becoming a victim. Stolen items from unlocked cars are commonly used in other crimes, such as credit card fraud. If you have a garage door opener in your car, leaving your car unlocked can give criminals access to your home, and leaving your keys in the car gives criminals a quick getaway. Criminals work fast, so get in the habit of locking your car each time you leave it. Thefts from cars are often crimes of opportunity, which is one side of the triangle of crime. Eliminating that opportunity can prevent you from becoming a victim.
At PSO, we recommend creating a habit of removing any valuables from your car and locking the doors to your home and car each night at 9 p.m., or the 9 p.m. Routine! Sticking to this daily reminder is a great step in preventing yourself from becoming a victim to crimes such as theft. Set a reminder on your phone to help you remember each night, and don’t forget to share the message with friends and neighbors to help ensure that your neighborhood is safe.
PSO deputies are here to help in any way they can! We were tagged in a video of our District 3 deputies assisting a driver in Trinity on June 19. The driver’s car broke down in the busy turn lane from westbound SR 54 to northbound Little Rd. Deputies pushed the car into a gas station to wait on a tow truck in the safety of the parking lot. We’re proud of our deputies making a difference, large and small, in our community every day.
