The new master of illusions isn’t a magician with a top hat, but a criminal behind a computer. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), create new opportunities for innovation; however, criminals have also used them to create deepfakes.
Deepfakes use AI to generate audio, video, and images to impersonate people and defraud victims. Scammers specifically imitate people you would usually trust, including family members, public figures, or business executives. They typically steal people’s likeness or sound from social media content, manipulating the content to serve their purpose.
The best way to protect yourself from AI-related scams is to stay updated on how criminals are using this technology. Pasco Sheriff’s Office is sharing indicators of deepfake scams. For information on ways to combat this crime, click here.
INDICATOR OF A DEEPFAKE SCAM
You receive unsolicited contact that pressures you to send money or information immediately.
They tell you to make a payment through wire transfer, gift card, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.
The subject in the video makes unrealistic movements, shows no or only occasional blinking, and has shadows around the eyes.
Listen for inconsistencies in language and for requests that are out of character.
