Focusing on the power of making responsible decisions, participants gain an understanding of the repercussions that come from destructive choices and behaviors. Those in the Juvenile Choice Program learn through classroom instruction and participation in exercises. PSO members take participants on a virtual tour of Pasco County’s Corrections Center, and walk them through the booking process. They also review scenarios to teach the importance of making informed choices.

In addition to learning about the power of choice, participants discuss the challenges they see today, such as peer pressure, substance abuse and involvement in criminal activities, and how those challenges influence their paths. Through these exchanges, PSO members spread awareness that teaches decision-making, communication and conflict resolution skills. After leaving the program, participants can use these skills to make responsible choices in their daily lives.

“By addressing these issues through a holistic approach, the Juvenile Choice Program aims to empower youth to make positive choices and lead fulfilling lives, while also promoting community safety and well-being,” stated Pasco Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Natalie Jones, who oversees the Juvenile Choice Program.

Mentorship plays a crucial role in the Juvenile Choice Program. Learning from PSO members helps participants develop a better relationship with law enforcement. The interactions between PSO members and those involved in the program focus on empowerment and education, which motivates kids to work toward a bright future. Additionally, both law enforcement and the kids build trust and a good rapport during the program, which opens the lines of communication and in turn, keeps our communities safe.

During the program, students reflect on their goals for the future and how they can achieve them. For those who don’t yet have a plan for their future, this time can inspire them to imagine the life they want and ways to achieve it. Participants walk away feeling excited and hopeful, which translates into their behavior at home, at school and within the community.

The Juvenile Choice Program meets in person at various locations across Pasco County and lasts three hours. The first meeting open to all children ages 11-17 will be on April 24, from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at 7601 Little Rd. in New Port Richey.
